Amritsar is located in the Northern region of India. In Hindi the word Amritsar means 'a Holy pool of nectar' and it was back in the year 1573 that work for digging the Holy pool had begun. One of the ancient cities of India, the most important fact about Amritsar is that it is the main seat of Sikh history and culture. The city itself was founded by the Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, and till present times it is the spiritual and temporal center of Sikh culture with the Golden Temple in Amritsar as its nucleus.

Day 02: Amritsar

After breakfast visit to the World-famous Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh.

The Golden Temple also known as Swarna mandir, located in Punjab is the famous pilgrimage place for Sikhs. This beautiful temple built by the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev, in the 16th Century, is a place of great beauty and sublime peacefulness. The temple has served as a meditation retreat for gurus and wandering mendicants since ancient times. Also called Sri Harimandir Sahib, this temple is a symbol of brotherhood and equality.

This temple has a unique Sikh architecture. The central part of the temple is situated in the middle of the sarovar and is fully covered with gold. Echoing across the serene lake, the beautiful music of the hymns accompanied by flutes, drums and other stringed instruments spread unique calmness and serenity in the air.

Also visit Gurudwara Baba Atal Rai Sahib, which is in the premises of Golden Temple.

Gurdwara Baba Atal Sahib is situated to the south of the Golden Temple, about 185 metres from Sarai Guru Ram Das. The nine-storey octagonal tower, standing 40 metres high, is the tallest building in Amritsar. Originally a samadhi, or cenotaph, enshrining the remains of Baba Atal Rai, a son of Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru of the Sikhs, it was transformed, with the passage of time, into a gurdwara.

Jallianwala Bagh is infamous as the site of one of the most monstrous massacres in human history and a dark event during the Indian independence struggle. Also known as Amritsar massacre, as many as 1100 peaceful protestors were killed when British troops opened fire on April 13, 1919. The brutal murder of thousands added fuel to the fight against the British and raised severe questions about the British intentions to rule India in a humane way. Today, the park has been converted into a memorial who sacrificed their lives.

Also if time permits explore the local market around Jallianwala Bagh and Golden Temple.

Afternoon visit to the Wagah Border for the retreat ceremony

We will depart at 14:30 hrs as vehicles can go up to the parking which is approx 500-700 metres from the venue. For those who cannot walk there are Golf carts arranged by BSF, which is on first cum first serve basis. We will leave early around 14:00 pm so that we can manage to get Golf carts for the elderly people in the group.

Wagah Border is an international borderline between India and Pakistan. Convoluted buildings, barriers and roads mark both sides of the border. The Swarna Jayanthi gate, which is the entry gate of the outpost, commands the magnificent scenery of verdant landscapes. Situated in between Lahore and Amritsar, evenings in this army outpost is very charming and colourful with the "Beating the Retreat" ceremony. The pageantry and pomp, and the change of guard within a short expanse make an appealing spectacle, which grabs large gathering.

Overnight at the hotel.
