Amritsar is a city in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab, 28 kilometers from the border with Pakistan.Founded in 1577 by Guru Ram Das, fourth Guru of the Sikhs, Amritsar (Pool of the Nectar of Immortality) is considered the centre of the Sikh religion. Now the second largest city of the Punjab state, it was once a junction of trade routes. The main attraction of Amritsar is the Golden Temple, the holiest of Sikh sites. The city itself is named after the sacred tank within this temple. This place is also famous for its Jallianwala Bagh massacre and its proximity to Wagah Border. Amritsar is synonymous with Kulchas, the maida bread baked in a tandoor and over the years, the city has also made a name for itself for its Punjabi cuisine and a delightful shopping destination. It is well connected with most of the important cities of India.
